Prof Pia Riggirozzi and Dr Natalia Cintra of the University of Southampton have recently participated as keynote speakers at the Fall symposium ‘Her Journey, Her Story, Her Rights: The Impact of Gender on Forced Migration’ at Fordham University New York, USA, Graduate School of Social Service. The event was organised by the Directors of Her Migrant Hub and took place on 10th November 2023. The symposium brought together discussants, using a multi-stakeholder approach to address the global and local implications of gendered migration processes, and center the voice of women with lived experiences of forced migration in developing recommendations for addressing challenges and advocating for improved migration policies.

As part of the activities organised by the host organisation, Pia and Natalia had also the opportunity to meet with Fordham students and faculty members; women activists, asylum seekers in NYC, and give a talk at the UN-NGO Committee on Forced Migration Monthly Meeting.

On her return from the USA, Prof Pia Riggorozzi, said: ‘What a fantastic event. Powerful & stimulating. We discussed conditions for protection of migrant women at city, state and international levels of governance. Shocking to hear same stories of dispossession affecting migrant women in Roraima (Brazil), Darien (Panamá) & New York’.

It is a huge pleasure to  invite you to our end of project conference on 26th and 27th June 2023 at the University of Southampton, UK.

In the conference we will present findings and outputs of the project Redressing Gendered Health Inequalities of Displaced Women and Girls in Contexts of Protracted Crisis in Central and South America (ReGHID). ReGHID is an ESRC funded interdisciplinary project that looks at health needs and rights of women and girls in displacement in South-South migration as well as the barriers/gaps of protection that affect them.

The conference is a day and a half, and we will have three themes structuring panels and keynotes: migration, gender and vulnerabilities; methodologies of research about and with populations in displacement; and migration, gender and responsibility for protection. The agenda is here.

We are also screening a 26-minute documentary Salir Adelante/Moving Forward. Salir Adelante is a documentary based on the stories of Venezuelan forced migrant women and girls who fled humanitarian crisis to rebuild their lives and hopes while experiencing the everyday struggles of unfamiliar and sometimes adverse places in Brazil. The documentary calls the attention to the perilous journeys to hope, safety and wellbeing they undertook as well as the failures of protection regimes and policies to redress the many risks, harms and barriers that stop migrant women and girls from enjoying the rights, dignity, and respect they are entitled to. The documentary screening will be followed by a Q&A session and debate.

We really hope you can join us!

Information about the film and the trailer at:  https://filmfreeway.com/saliradelantedoc

Venue: the event will take place at  Building 100 – Room 4013, Highfield Campus, Southampton, UK.

You can book your place here: Eventbrite link .

Best wishes,

Pía Riggirozzi (and the ReGHID team)

As part of the Project ‘Redressing gender inequalities in health of displaced women and girls in contexts of protracted crisis in Central and South America’ (ReGHID), the team led by Prof Pia Riggirozzi (Principal Investigator) of the University of Southampton, UK, Zeni Lamy at the Federal University Of Maranhão (UFMA), and Maria do Carmo Leal and Rita Bacuri at Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), in Brazil, carried out two key social and policy engagement events in Brazil between 13-16 March 2023 which were held in the cities of Manaus and Brasilia.

The ReGHID Project is an interdisciplinary and international consortium that brought together research institutions from Central and South America and the UK. In Brazil, the research was coordinated by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation and the Federal University of Maranhão with a focus on Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) needs and the experiences of access to health and protection of Venezuelan women and adolescents who forcibly migrated to Brazil.

The events in Manaus and Brasilia

Dr Nísia Trindade Lima, Brazilian Health Minister at the event in Brasilia

The team presented and discussed findings of the study and recommendations to redress gaps and lags in protection of migrant women and girls, particularly in relation to their needs and challenges related to the sexual and reproductive health.

Dr Nísia Trindade Lima, Brazil Health Minister at the Brasilia eventA very engaged  audience of local and regional governmental and non-governmental organisations, as well as policy makers and experts attended these events. ReGHID was particularly pleased to welcome Brazil’s first woman Health Minister, Dr Nísia Trindade Lima, as an official guest at the event in Brasilia where she highlighted the importance of the inclusion of the women’s health agenda under her portfolio, and the significance of the ReGHID project and its recommendations, which were summarised in an Executive Summary, available here.

It was also the first opportunity to screen ReGHID’s documentary Salir Adelante / Moving Forward in Brazil. The film, directed by Bruna Curcio and produced based on data from the project, tells stories of Venezuelan migrant women and adolescents in Brazil, their opportunities and challenges that they face to rebuild their lives. The documentary trailer can be accessed here. Migrant women and civil society organisations working with them and featured in the film were invited at the screening and took part of the Q&A in Manaus. The film has been selected for the Best documentary prize at the WRPN Women’s International Film Festival, the director reflected that ‘both audiences complement each other …and are very important for a holistic comprehension of how practical actions could be taken’.

Presentations of research results were made by local researchers Maria do Carmo Leal, from the National School of Public Health of Fiocruz (ENSP/Fiocruz) and Zeni Lamy from UFMA, Prof Pia Riggirozzi and Natalia Cintra (University of Southampton), as well as Ivan Ochoa (York University) from the UK, and Jovana Ocampo (Universidad de los Andes) from Colombia.

Rodrigo Correa-Oliveira, Vice president of Research and Biological Collections at Fiocruz, said ‘The research shows the sexual and reproductive health needs of these migrant women from Venezuela and demands that these principles must be improved in practice’ .

Outcomes of the events included a series of recommendations such as the guarantee of socioeconomic rights and social inclusion as a determinant of health, sexual and reproductive health care policies.

Poster presentation at the Manaus event

Pia Riggirozzi stated that the acknowledgment of health as a human right, and its relation to dignity, autonomy and other social determinants has been pioneered by Brazil and it is now an opportunity to honour those principles by taking actions based on evidence.  The research can be used to improve practices and generate appropriate health policies, services, and long-term health protection for migrants.’ These claims were seconded by Zeni Lamy who addressed the ‘importance of designing public policies which have a long-term impact’. As a result of these events, ReGHID is now closely working with the National School of Public Health of Fiocruz in order to turn some of the study’s recommendation into practice. ReGHID has also been invited to participate in the next Free National Conference on the Health of Migrant Populations, and will continue to push for health policies that take into consideration how both migration and gender are a social determinants of health, and will work with governments, civil society organisations and migrants themselves to push this agenda forward.

You are cordially invited to participate in the webinar called “Reflexiones sobre violencias y salud sexual y reproductiva de mujeres migrantes” (Reflections on violence and reproductive sexual health of migrant women).

This event is organized by FLACSO El Salvador in conjunction with the Red de Conocimiento sobre Seguridad Ciudadana – Conose (Knowledge Network on Citizen Security), a network of academic institutions that emerged in 2016 with the aim of generating spaces for reflection and collaboration to produce rigorous evidence on violence and crime in the countries of Central America and the Dominican Republic. The Conose network has focused on analyzing the different forms of violence faced by women in Latin America, specifically in the region of Central America and the Dominican Republic, and is currently promoting the issue of human mobility.

The webinar will present the results of the ReGHID Project in the Mesoamerican corridor and the results of the survey carried out on Venezuelan migrant women in Brazil. The activity aims to generate a space for critical discussion that contributes to academic and political knowledge about violence and the sexual and reproductive health challenges faced by women in migration conditions in the Latin American region and the institutional responses that have been given around these topics.

The event will take place on Thursday 23 February 2023 at 10:00 – 12:00 Central American time (16:00 – 18:00 UK time) via Zoom.

You can register for this event via this link. Please join us!

Results from the Survey in Sexual and Reproductive Health implemented by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the University of Southampton as part of the ReGHID Project, led by Principal Investigator Prof. Pía Riggirozzi (PAIR), Co-I Prof. Amos Channon and Dr Sarahí Rueda-Salazar (SSD), have been successfully presented and discussed with local organisations (Governmental and NGOs) in Honduras and Regional government (SICA) in El Salvador.

Presentations and further discussion were based on the following preliminary insights: i) differentiated unmet needs in healthcare as access to prenatal care during pregnancy ; ii) unmet needs in menstrual health (lack of access to privacy and basic services for enjoying menstruation with dignity); iii) access to medical attention without solving the necessity for health, essentially for women travelling with their children; iv) negative impact on mental health; and v) discrimination and irregular migration status as main barriers for getting access to healthcare during migratory journey.  Gender based Violence and adulthood centred healthcare attention for adolescents were also remarkable insights from the qualitative approach.

During activities were also shared informative material created by ReGHID project in collaboration with OIM/Honduras for women and adolescent migrants about Menstrual Health and Sexual Autonomy that will be provided during health attention in three reception centres in San Pedro Sula. Brochure content also includes integral services location at geographical level for women and adolescents in health attention (general health and sexual and reproductive health), social protection, legal assistance and psico-emotional support in Honduras.

At both events, the FLACSO El Salvador research team, led by Co-I MSc. Mónica Linares, also presented the results of the qualitative research carried out in the Mesoamerican corridor, based on interviews with cisgender and trans women, and migrant and displaced adolescents from the northern countries of Central America (Honduras , El Salvador and Guatemala); and with health service providers and organisations linked to migration and health issues, from the government sector, international and civil society organisations from Mexico, El Salvador and Honduras. The study provides evidence on the reasons for migrating, difficulties and risks during the journey, and the needs and barriers to accessing sexual and reproductive health services for women and adolescents from northern Central America who migrate to Mexico and the USA.

In the light of the results and related discussion, joint action and mutual agreements among organisations involved emerged for future action plans that contemplate positioning Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) of migrant women during displacement in the public agenda for policy strategies in the short and mid-term across the Central American Region. Some of those actions were: promote awareness about the risk exposure during displacement in home countries; incentivise training for healthcare/service provider workers in borders or high influx hotpot of migrants about health, gender and migration – key initiatives that guarantee dignity and humanitarian attention during medical/general attention to migrant women and adolescents during forced displacement; and replicate the survey in other countries in order to get a better picture of the characteristics of migrants and their SRH situation during displacement, among other initiatives with same relevance in the context of humanitarian crisis, human mobility and Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights.

Preliminary results from the Sexual and Reproductive Health survey in Central America implemented in collaboration between the ReGHID team of University of Southampton (UoS) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM/Northern Triangle) will be disseminated very soon in Honduras and El Salvador during a two days’ workshop event.

Principal findings from the qualitative approach of the ReGHID project led by FLACSO El Salvador and paramount insights from the REGHID survey in the South Corridor (Brazil) led by the Fiocruz Foundation team, will also be shared with key stakeholders and service providers in these two relevant activities with policy implication for the Northern Triangle.

Results will be presented by Professor Pía Riggirozzi (ReGHID Principal Investigator- UoS), María do Carmo Leal (ReGHID survey in South Corridor/Fiocruz), Mónica Linares (ReGHID-Qualitative approach in Central America/ FLACSO El Salvador), Sarahí Rueda (ReGHID survey in Central America- UoS) and Nicéforo Garnelo (OIM/Northern Triangle).

The first event will be hosted by OIM in San Pedro Sula, Honduras on Friday 11th November 2022, at the Hotel Copantl & Convention Center, Res. Los Arcos, Blvr. del Sur, San Pedro Sula, with the attendance of representatives from local NGOs and Government. After sharing preliminary results of the ReGHID project in the region, the participants will reflect on preliminary results to provide recommendations and initiatives to promote and guarantee Sexual and Reproductive Health rights (SRHR) of women and adolescent migrants in displacement.

The second event, in collaboration with FLACSO El Salvador and OIM, will take place in San Salvador. The main purpose of this activity is to present results to an audience of academia, stakeholders and Central American organisations of health (SE-COMISCA). This will be followed by a closed round-table with SE-COMISCA members to articulate policy strategies with regional implications on behalf of the SRHR of women and adolescent migrants from Central America. This event will take place on Monday 14th November 2022, at the Hotel Barceló, San Salvador.  The morning session will be transmitted  live via the FLACSO El Salvador Facebook account.

The ReGHID Project team is incredibly excited to announce that after three years of research, its forthcoming book ‘Displacement, Human Rights, and Sexual and Reproductive Health Conceptualising Gender Protection Gaps in Latin America’ by Natalia CintraDavid Owen and Pía Riggirozzi, is now available for pre-order from Bristol University Press.

Focusing on the flight of women and girls from Venezuela, to Northern Brazil, this book examines the gendered nature of forced displacement and the ways in which the failures of protection regimes to be sensitive to displacement’s gendered character affect women and girls, and their sexual and reproductive health.
Highlighting how categorical legal distinctions between ‘refugees’ and ‘migrants’ fail to capture the dynamics of forced migration in Latin America, it investigates how the operation of this categorical divide generates responsibility and protection gaps in relation to female forced migrants which act as determinants of sexual and reproductive health. Drawing on the voices of displaced women, it argues that a robust political ethics of protection of the forcibly displaced must encompass all necessary fleers and be responsive to the gendered character of forced displacement and particularly to effective access to sexual and reproductive health rights.

The book will be for general sale from May 2023, further details via this link.
